Subject

Spatial and Regional Development Planning

  • Analysis of the resilience of regions, infrastructures and societal groups in the face of extreme events.
  • Planning strategies to deal with climate and societal change.
  • Evaluation of the impacts of existing tools and measures in regional, urban and environmental planning as well as infrastructure development (critical infrastructures)
  • Development of planning tools to reduce vulnerability and risk to abrupt and creeping hazards.
  • International and European influence on regional and environmental planning in Germany and the EU (e.g. EU directives).

Vulnerability and risk assessment as well as "Adaptive Urban/Spatial Governance"

  • Development of conceptual frameworks for the examination of vulnerability and risk profiles in the context of natural hazards and climate change.
  • Quantitative and qualitative assessment methods for measuring and assessing vulnerability, resilience and adaptive capacities of various societal groups, critical infrastructures and regions (expanded planning principles).
  • Further development of approaches in the area of “Adaptive Urban/ Spatial Governance” as well as concepts for climate proofing and strategic planning. Development and application of scenario methods in planning.

Coupled social-ecological systems

  • Research concerning the dynamics of coupled social-ecological systems under the conditions of climate change.
  • Analysis of feedback and regulation processes, for example with regard to the effects of heat stress on humans and technical systems (e.g. power supply) and corresponding feedback mechanisms, in terms of the security of critical infrastructures, humans and the resilience of communities.
