Increasingly, we are being confronted with Extreme Weather Events (EWE). These EWE can adversely impact our critical infrastructure in different ways. Significantly impacting on the surrounding population and society in which they serve in many ways, including from a social, transportation, economic, health and environmental perspective. The goal of the INTACT project is to gather information on the effects of EWE on critical infrastructure and developing solutions and measures that can be taken to reduce the impact(s). This information will subsequently be incorporated in an INTACT Reference Guide which will assist in creating more durable and lasting infrastructure throughout Europe.
INTACT helps improve the resilience of critical infrastructure in advance of extreme weather events. In recent years the frequency and intensity of EWE have increased, resulting in significant demanding, complex problems for both governments and societies alike, which require paramount response. Critical infrastructure and their role within a society makes them vulnerable to the effects of extreme weather. As such, action is needed to better protect Europe’s critical infrastructure.
In practical terms, the INTACT project draws together existing knowledge on extreme weather events, climate change and critical infrastructure from across Europe. INTACT investigates potential solutions and measures to alleviate the effects of extreme weather. The ultimate objective is to create a set of guidelines, the ‘INTACT Reference Guide’, to aid policy makers, decision makers and other stakeholders to establish and strengthen durable and lasting infrastructure. The INTACT project comprises different steps, which will ultimately lead to the formulation of the ‘INTACT Reference Guide’.
